Why should I consent for an Autopsy?
An autopsy (also known as a post-mortem examination or necropsy) is the examination of the body of a dead person and is performed primarily to determine the cause of death, to identify or characterize the extent of disease states that the person may have had, or to determine whether a particular medical or surgical treatment has been effective. Autopsies are performed by pathologists, medical doctors who have received specialty training in the diagnosis of diseases by the examination of body fluids and tissues. In academic institutions, autopsies sometimes are also requested for teaching and research purposes. Forensic autopsies have legal implications and are performed to determine if death was an accident, homicide, suicide, or a natural event. The word autopsy is derived from the Greek word autopsia: "to see with one's own eyes."
Having known what autopsy is all about ,the question is it necessary to consent for that to be perform on our lost loved one . I am here to tell you that it's necessary. There are some illness that runs through gene, example of such illness are diabetes, cancer, chromosomal abnormalities e.g downsydrome, achondroplasia ,marfan syndrome, cystic fibrosis, hamophilia, sickle cell anemia . Teratogenic problems e.g alcohol, radiation, lead, certain infections may result to the death of loved one and because it was not taking cognizance of It can lead to the death of a loved one. I witnessed a case where a man lost his first issue and when he was advised to consent for autopsy he declined reason been that God gave and God has taken. Two years later the same man came to the morgue and I told him that his face looks familiar do I know him from anywhere and he said " I was here 2 years ago to pick the body of my child and that he is here again for the same his second son. I felt sorry for him and I advice him to consent for autopsy to ascertain the cause of death. He agreed with me and signed the consent for, after the autopsy the results shows that the child had congenital heart defect and some abnormal malformation which is a teratogenic problems. That's to say that the wife has to examine the kind of drugs and drinks she take while she is pregnant.
It's good to know the cause of death of a dear one in other for the living to take caution . In some teaching hospital it's usually free. A relative asked me, do you people take something from the body of a dead person ? The answer is no we don't take anything out. Everything will be examined and sutured back, in fact you can conduct autopsy as many as you want in different places on the same body if you suspected a foul play. Please don't be very busy that you don't want autopsy because you don't want waste of time with the corpse so that you can go back to your work. You can save your life and the life's of other of your relatives living by consenting for an autopsy.a problem known is a problem half solved. When you know the cause of your dear ones death you will know how to take care of your live. Insist on autopsy.
